NEW STORYBOOK ABOUT COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

Released on September 19, 2003

Today a new children's storybook, A Community School Quilt, was launched at Riverside Community School in Prince Albert. Saskatoon Idylwyld MLA and Legislative Secretary for SchoolPLUS David Forbes, author Sue Bland, and students from Riverside, Westview and St. John Community Schools were in attendance.

"What makes this project so unique is that it depicts students' ideas, words and pictures demonstrating what a Community School is all about," Forbes said. "It exemplifies SchoolPLUS because it reflects the very essence of community in giving Saskatchewan students what they need to succeed."

Sue Bland, the writer for this project, visited 12 Community Schools across Saskatchewan. She collected ideas, quotes and drawings from elementary school students. The thoughts and creativity of the children are reflected in A Community School Quilt.

"It is wonderful to come full circle – the students gave me so many rich ideas about what community schools mean to them," Bland said. "I hope they see many of their own ideas and artwork reflected back as we look at this book together today."

Schools and their communities are invited to use this storybook in discussions between young students, families and school staff to explore what they see and would like to see in their Community School.

"This storybook supports and strengthens the goals of SchoolPLUS and the Community Schools program and reflects that Saskatchewan really is a great place to live and learn. I thank the many individuals, who offered their imagination, inspiration and talent. This storybook was made possible by the generous sharing and contributions of many," Forbes said.

Community Schools draw on parent and community involvement in the school to help students learn and grow. Preschoolers, students and their families are provided with enhanced programming such as Prekindergarten, nutrition and babysitting programs, cultural activities, parenting and resume writing classes.
