The Government of Saskatchewan today announced funding of $4 million toward the capital costs associated with the riverbank development project in Saskatoon's south downtown area. The announcement was made at the official sod-turning ceremony attended by Premier Lorne Calvert, Saskatoon Mayor Jim Maddin, and Meewasin Valley Authority Chair Dennis Johnson.
"The province is pleased to support this initiative," Premier Lorne Calvert said. "Public access to miles of riverbank makes Saskatoon unique and allows for a variety of seasonal activities that will be enhanced by this project, adding to the quality of life for residents and visitors in the Saskatoon area."
"Today's funding announcement and sod-turning marks an exciting beginning for redevelopment in Saskatoon's south downtown," Mayor Jim Maddin said. "This beautiful riverfront project will be a catalyst for development at Block 146 and the Gathercole Building and grounds. It's a great day for Saskatoon residents."
Mayor Maddin also applauded the efforts of the Meewasin Valley Authority who has agreed to be the lead partner in the development project.
"By creating opportunities for public awareness and enjoyment, Meewasin strives to increase understanding and to ensure a vibrant and healthy river valley. We're proud of our city and want to provide a good first impression to travelers visiting Saskatoon," Meewasin Valley Authority Chair Dennis Johnson said. "The participation of the province will result in improved visitor and tourist access to the riverbank."
The riverfront development project is one part of an initiative to redevelop the south downtown area of Saskatoon. Following extensive public consultation, the riverfront design will eventually include:
• a riverwalk for close-to-the-water strolling;
• river viewing areas to strengthen the concept of the "river as a stage";
• a river tributary and garden including a suspension bridge;
• a site for a feature building (restaurant);
• a promenade that could eventually tie in the Friendship and Kiwanis Parks;
• a new boat dock to support and enhance river activities and events;
• a pavilion to service day-to-day activities and special events;
• a children's water play area;
• two amphitheatres to support performances and other events; and,
• links to Riversdale, the downtown and Broadway.
The initial phase of the $8 million Riverfront Development Project will be completed in two years. The Meewasin Valley Authority is confident that the majority of the remaining capital can be raised through fundraising.
