BANDING TOGETHER TO SAVE THE BURROWING OWL INTERPRETIVE CENTRE

Co-operation among several Saskatchewan organizations will ensure that the Burrowing Owl Interpretive Centre in Moose Jaw is able to continue operation.

A recent financial squeeze had meant the centre was due to be closed on June 15th, 2003. However with more than $37,000 raised from several sources the centre will be able to run for another year.

"The people raising money that I was most impressed with are members of a group of school children from E'cole St. Margaret," Community Resources and Employment Minister Glenn Hagel said. "They went door-to-door trying to raise money to save the interpretive centre. They have demonstrated a commitment we all share - to conserve our environment for today and for the future."

The students managed to raise more than $3,100. Saskatchewan Environment presented a grant of $7,500, the Mayor of Moose Jaw has committed the city to $7,500, the Moose Jaw Exhibition Company donated $7,500 and the Moose Jaw Wildlife Federation donated $5,000. Donations were also received from Nature Moose Jaw and the Moose Jaw Wakamow Rotary Club. Sask Energy also continued its annual grant of $7,000.

"The response and support from everyone has been overwhelming and we would like to once again express our appreciation and thanks to everyone involved," Moose Jaw Exhibition Company President Robert Lewis said. "This interpretive centre is an important branch of our company and the funding will enable us to continue with the educational component throughout Saskatchewan schools and communities, ecotourism and our efforts to keep the burrowing owls alive and well."

The Moose Jaw Exhibition Company is in the process of hiring a director for the centre to pursue fundraising and other activities necessary to ensure the long-term success and survival of the centre.
