NEW WEB SITE PROVIDES FREE AND EASY ACCESS TO TENDERS

Released on February 5, 2003

A new Web site launched today will provide Saskatchewan businesses with free and easy access to provincial government tenders.

"We are making it easier forSaskatchewan businesses to do business with the provincial government. This new web site makes it easier and less expensive for Saskatchewan businesses to bid on tenders," Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Property Management Corporation ( SPMC) Andrew Thomson said.

Every year SPMC issues approximately 1,800 tenders for everything from office supplies to fire suppression supplies, highway road products to food and equipment. These tenders will now be available free of charge at www.sasktenders.ca, as a supplement to the national electronic posting system which suppliers must pay to access.

"Saskatchewan businesses already win more than 80 per cent of the tenders issued through SPMC, but we believe there is more that can be done to support the businesses in our province," Thomson said.

Last month, SPMC held a one-day Purchaser's Showcase in Saskatoon. The event was attended by more than 750 people representing 450 supplier groups who were able to meet with public-sector agencies interested in buying goods and services from Saskatchewan suppliers. In December, the government issued a discussion paper to encourage dialogue about ways to improve public-sector procurement for Saskatchewan businesses, including a new Saskatchewan preference policy, supplier development initiatives, and new guidelines for the procurement of service contracts. Feedback on the paper, which is available at www.sasktenders.ca, is being received until February 15th.

Over the last three years, government has purchased more than $300 million in goods and services from Saskatchewan businesses, not including government spending on construction.
