Released on April 11, 2003
Starting June 1st, 2003, the legal speed limit will be increased to 110 kilometres per hour on Saskatchewan's four-lane highways.
"The government's vision includes building better highways and the massive investment we've made to accelerate twinning means that our four-lane highways can accommodate an increased speed limit," Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Through this investment we are now in a position to move people and goods as quickly and efficiently as possible while, at the same time, ensuring safety."
The June 1st implementation date enables the government to move forward with an enhanced driver safety campaign while giving crews time to install new signage on affected highways.
The new speed limit will apply to twinned sections of Highways 1, 11 and 16. Current speed limits will be maintained in higher-risk sections such as the Grasswood intersection on Highway 11 south of Saskatoon, and possibly in and around Swift Current and Moose Jaw once detailed engineering assessments are completed.
"Our driving public supports an increase in the speed limit on our four-lane highways," Wartman said. "We will step up our public education and safety campaigns to help ensure the speed at which drivers operate remains within an acceptable range."
With accelerated commitments to completing the twinning, there will be significant construction activity on Highways 1 and 16 this summer. Motorists are reminded to slow to 60 km/h when travelling through the "Orange Zone."
The 2003/04 department budget is the second largest in the province's history. With this budget, Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation is on track to fulfill its original commitment to invest $900 million over three years.
