The community of North Battleford unveiled its newest landmark, a Trans
Canada Trail (TCT) pavilion. The pavilion honours the completion of the 30
kilometre North Battleford-Prince portion of the TCT. North Battleford is
the third community to open a pavilion within Saskatchewan.
"The North Battleford-Prince portion of the trail is an excellent example
of how communities can work together to promote healthy active living and
use their local resources," Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne
Crofford said. "This pavilion will be a legacy for future generations."
The TCT is a national trail that will be more than 17,000 kilometres in
length, and once completed it will be the world's longest trail of its
kind. The portion of the TCT that routes through Saskatchewan will be
approximately 1,400 kilometres in length. TCT Pavilions recognize those
who have donated funds to build the TCT. The North Battleford pavilion has
a distinctive red roof and three double-sided acrylic panels that are
permanently inscribed with names of donors.
The Government of Saskatchewan is contributing $300,000 in Centenary Funds
over a three-year period to help communities complete the Saskatchewan
portion of the TCT. North Battleford began developing its portion of the
trail before the Centenary Funds were allocated, and as a result completed
the development of their trail and pavilion independent of government
funding.
The Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) will be managing
the administration of Centenary Funds, and community and volunteer trail
clubs are strongly encouraged to apply. "Assisting communities in the
development of trails in the province is an integral part of what SPRA
stands for," SPRA President Garry McKay said. "We are very excited and
appreciative of the money the government is allocating to trail building
and know that it will leave a very important legacy in our province."
