Innovations created by Highways and Transportation employees that save time
and resources were unveiled today in Prince Albert.
Demonstrations were held for 10 of the department's top innovations that
help increase the efficiency of equipment working on provincial highways.
"There is a lot of creative work that happens within the department,"
Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Department staff
are constantly creating new equipment and techniques as well as modifying
existing technology to increase the production and safety of our crews."
The department initiated an Innovation Registry in 1991, as an avenue for
sharing new ideas and concepts with other department employees. The
results have included safety improvements to trucks, including the debut of
a tri-axle truck that is currently in a pilot project stage. The tri-axle
truck is able to haul twice the load of a tandem truck. During the winter
months when salt and sand is spread for traction, this unit can cover
double the kilometres before reloading.
Other innovations include a new and improved paint striping truck that can
spray water-based or oil-based paints; a hydrodrum that spreads gravel
evenly on roads and has been patented by the department; and a Hydraulic
Roll-up Tarp that acts as a box cover to prevent materials such as salt or
gravel from getting wet or spilling over the sides.
Some of the innovations have also allowed people with disabilities to
continue working in their jobs. A tandem truck was retrofitted to allow a
disabled employee to continue operating the dump truck after losing his arm
in an accident.
"This program has created a lot of interest and excitement within the
department and the private sector," Wartman said. "The department
encourages staff to be innovative and look at existing machinery and think
of ways to make it better, safer and more efficient."
