The provincial government will be promoting Saskatchewan's investment
climate and track record as a top uranium producer to 400 international
nuclear leaders in London later this week.
Industry and Resources Minister Eldon Lautermilch is speaking to the World
Nuclear Association Symposium on September 6th. He will tell the audience
the province is a great place to live, work and invest. Lautermilch will
also outline initiatives that have sustained public support for uranium
mining in the province.
"Our uranium mining industry is a key economic driver, employing thousands
in northern Saskatchewan," Lautermilch said. "It has the best safety
record in Canada."
"The strength and health of the mining industry is important to the
economic future of the province, so it's critical that international
customers see Saskatchewan as a stable, long-term producer of uranium with
a positive business climate."
Saskatchewan is a world leader in uranium mining and is home to the largest
and richest uranium and potash deposits, accounting for approximately 30
per cent of global production of each. The uranium industry is responsible
for 4,300 jobs directly and indirectly, and has invested more than $3.2
billion in capital, exploration and predevelopment expenditures in
Saskatchewan.
Lautermilch will also be meeting with Cogema Resources. Cogema Resources
is a major uranium producer in Saskatchewan and its parent company is
headquartered in France.
Mining is Saskatchewan's third largest industry after oil and natural gas,
and agriculture.
It contributes $2.4 billion a year to the provincial economy and generates
more than 17,000 jobs directly and indirectly. Mining companies paid $240
million in direct mineral royalties and taxes last year.
