The Farm Input Price Survey reports that average prices for bulk diesel
fuel purchased in October increased by 3.5 per cent from prices reported in
September.
According to the survey, the prices paid by survey participants for bulk
diesel and gasoline delivered to farms has risen steadily since this
spring. Although farmers have seen bulk fuel prices rise this season,
prices paid in October 2002 are similar to those paid last year at this
time.
In an effort to provide more information about farm input costs, new
information about on-farm labour costs is included in this month's report.
Survey participants who operate grain and mixed grain and livestock
operations reported on-farm labour costs averaging $12.06 per hour for the
period of April 2002 to September 2002. This represents an average annual
increase of 5.3 per cent based on 1997 figures by Saskatchewan Agriculture,
Food and Rural Revitalization that showed average on-farm labour costs of
$9.53 per hour.
Price changes for livestock items varied. Prices paid for twine used in
round balers went down by 1.7 per cent. The price of fence posts increased
by four per cent from prices paid in August, and the price paid for cobalt
salt block fell by more than 3.5 per cent.
The Farm Input Price Survey Report is produced monthly by Saskatchewan
Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization to provide farmers with current
information about prices paid for key crop and livestock production inputs.
The data used in the report is collected from a network of Saskatchewan
farmers located throughout the province, with survey data gathered directly
from farmers' transactions. The monthly Farm Input Price Report is
available on the Web at www.agr.gov.sk.ca/statistics/surveys.asp.
