IMPROVING HIGHWAY 13 NEAR OGEMA

Released on May 29, 2002

A tender has been awarded for surfacing 19.5 km of Highway 13 west of Ogema

this construction season.

"We are maintaining our focus on building better highways," Highways and

Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Work on this $2.2 million

surfacing project is expected to begin in mid-July, 2002, and should be

completed by mid-August. An estimated 62 full-time workers will be needed

to complete the project."

The improvement project on Highway 13 will begin 1.1 km west of Ogema to

5.4 km west of the junction of Highway 34. Work will begin in mid-June on

gravel crushing and stockpiling in preparation for construction. Anderson

Rental and Paving Ltd. was awarded the surfacing contract.

"Highway 13 has seen an increase in truck traffic, leading to wear and

tear," Wartman said. "The surfacing project now underway near Ogema will

help to revitalize this highway. Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation

is working hard to fix roads across the province to improve driver safety."

This project is being funded through the Prairie Grain Roads Program, a

federal- provincial-municipal cost-sharing program targeted at grain-

impacted roads and secondary highways.

Last construction season, a total of 42 km of Highway 13 was resurfaced

near Stoughton, Weyburn and Assiniboia. This construction season, 99 km

will be resurfaced and paved near Arcola, Trossachs, Pangman, Ogema,

Lafleche and Hazenmore.

This project was identified in the 2001/02 Winter Tender Schedule worth an

estimated $86.8 million for Saskatchewan highway work. The Winter Tender

Schedule ensures plans are in place early to provide timely and efficient

delivery of highway improvements when construction begins in the spring.

The government has committed $293 million to building better highways in

2002/03. More than 700 km of highways will be reconstructed and paved this

year.
