PREMIER ASKS KARWACKI TO JOIN FARM LOBBY
Released on May 2, 2002
Premier Lorne Calvert has written to Saskatchewan Liberal Leader David
Karwacki asking him to join the coalition lobbying for a trade injury
payment from Ottawa for Canadian farmers.
"I have asked Mr. Karwacki to put aside partisan politics and join other
Saskatchewan MLA's who are speaking with a unified voice in asking the
federal government for trade injury support," Premier Calvert said.
"We passed a unanimous motion in the house yesterday calling on four senior
Liberal cabinet ministers to come to Saskatchewan to hear and respond to
the concerns of Saskatchewan producers in light of the announcement of
massive new U-S farm subsidies."
Premier Calvert is confident Karwacki will join the farm lobby and also use
his influence to convince his federal colleagues to come to the
Saskatchewan Legislature.
"Mr. Karwacki has said he has a close relationship with Federal Finance
Minister Paul Martin," Calvert said. "Mr. Martin is the politician who
controls the federal purse strings so I would think Mr. Karwacki's
influence will play a vital role in convincing the federal Liberals to come
to Saskatchewan."
