ESTEVAN VOLUNTEER HONOURED

Evelyn Johnson of Estevan is one of seven citizens who will receive the

Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal for 2001. Johnson is a retired teacher with a

long record of volunteer service in education and the arts.



Lieutenant Governor Lynda Haverstock announced the recipients. The Medal

recognizes outstanding volunteer service or exceptional community

involvement beyond the individual's normal profession or duties.



The other recipients are:



James Burnett, of Regina, a long-time educator well known as an

outstanding volunteer for the Saskatchewan Lung Association;



Clayton Campbell, of North Battleford, who has volunteered in

numerous sports, recreational and service activities in his

community;



Gary Hyland, of Moose Jaw, a writer and retired teacher best known

as the founder of the Festival of Words in Moose Jaw;



Evelyn Johnson, of Estevan, a retired teacher with a long record of

volunteer service in education and the arts;



Farrah Mateen, of Prince Albert, a student at the University of

Saskatchewan and an active volunteer in many different areas; and



Jean Thomas, of Regina, active with the scouting movement, church

activities, seniors, war veterans and musical groups.



At 20, Mateen will be the youngest person to receive a Saskatchewan

provincial honour. She has been active since 1993 in Students Against

Drinking and Driving. She also volunteers with the Prince Albert Health

District, the Terry Fox Foundation, the Saskatoon United Way, the Prince

Albert Cosmopolitan Club, and the Prince Albert Winter Festival and

Children's Carnival. As well, she is a student senator at the University

of Saskatchewan and fills many other student volunteer roles on campus.



The Saskatchewan Honours Advisory Council selects deserving individuals

from the nominations received. Recipients also are presented with a

certificate and lapel pin and may use the initials SVM after their names.



Including the 2001 recipients, 57 Saskatchewan citizens have been awarded

the medal since its inception in 1995.



The Lieutenant Governor will present the medals during a ceremony at the

Legislature on April 25th.
