School divisions across Saskatchewan have taken advantage of a new teacher
bursary program to help school boards recruit and retain teachers,
particularly in rural and northern Saskatchewan.
Funding of one million dollars was made available to school boards for
teacher recruitment and retention initiatives in the 2001-2002 budget.
"The main focus of this initiative is to target those areas where the
greatest needs have been identified," Education Minister Jim Melenchuk
said. "All Saskatchewan students, regardless of where they live, must have
access to a wide range of learning opportunities."
The areas specifically targeted include mathematics, physics and chemistry,
technology, practical and applied arts, special needs and Aboriginal
education, including Native Studies and languages. The initiative also
supports training for teachers to become principals.
"The Teacher Recruitment and Retention Initiative provides a unique
opportunity for professional development," Lance McQueen, a grade 12
chemistry teacher at Warman High School, said. "The university course I am
presently taking is directly related to the physics curriculum and expands
my personal knowledge and interest in astronomy. It has an immediate
benefit to me and my students currently enrolled in senior science."
To date, 41 school boards have applied for grants for 144 teachers.
Bursaries have been granted on a cost-shared basis between the school
boards and the Department of Education.
Along with McQueen, four other teachers from the Saskatchewan Valley School
Division were offered bursaries to pursue studies. These teachers work at
Warman Elementary, Blaine Lake Composite, Venture Heights Elementary in
Martensville and Waldheim School.
