Saskatchewan's minimum wage will increase this year.
A two-stage increase will see the provincial minimum wage go up 35 cents an
hour on May 1st, 2002 (to $6.35 an hour) and another 30 cents an hour (to
$6.65 an hour) on November 1st, 2002. This is the first increase to the
minimum wage since January 1st, 1999.
"This increase balances the needs of minimum wage earners with the need for
our province to be economically competitive," Labour Minister Deb Higgins
said. "Increasing the wage will help the people in our workforce who need
it most."
Recommendations for changes to the wage come from the Minimum Wage Board,
an independent agency that consults with stakeholders on issues surrounding
the minimum wage and advises government on all matters affecting the wage.
"Minimum wage and low-income earners usually spend all their income in
their home communities. A modest increase like this one will contribute to
local economies by boosting retail sales and personal consumption," Higgins
said.
Approximately five per cent of the non-agricultural labour force receives
the minimum wage.
