The Saskatoon Police Service will receive $145,000 from the Province's
Centenary Fund toward the development of the Central Division Station
Project.
Premier Lorne Calvert, made the announcement today at a celebration marking
the launch of the project.
"The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to support this new facility,"
Calvert said. "The new Central Division Station and community policing
strategy will contribute significantly to the safety and well-being of the
people of Saskatoon."
The former Little Chief Gas Station will be renovated to accommodate walk-
in requests for police service. As well, the facility will provide a small
meeting room and office space for Community Liaison Officers. These
officers are part of a community policing strategy that provides a critical
link between the police and the community.
"This new satellite police station speaks to our commitment to the
community policing model," Saskatoon Mayor Jim Maddin said. "The enhanced
presence will bring the police closer to the citizens they serve."
"I am very pleased the government has chosen to support our Community
Policing storefront here in Riversdale," Police Chief Russell Sabo
said. "As we move forward on our community policing initiatives, the
addition of this community station will help us to better meet the needs of
the citizens of our city and help reunite the police and the community."
The $325,000 project will be cost shared by the City of Saskatoon, the
Saskatoon Police Service and the province. The Centenary Fund was
established to leave a legacy of Saskatchewan's centennial for future
generations. Leading up to the centennial celebrations in 2005, the
government is funding projects that are of provincial or regional interest
and develop municipal infrastructure.
