Saskatchewan Environment has received some inquiries about tiny yellow
particles that have dusted the Regina area and collected in water bodies.
This yellow powder is coniferous tree pollen, released by male fir, spruce
and pine trees.
"Because of the cool, late spring there seems to be an unusually large
quantity this year," Terry Hanley, of Saskatchewan Environment's
Environmental Protection Branch said, "so we want to make people aware of
it."
The pollen will wash away with rainfall and once it is waterlogged, it will
sink to the bottom of water bodies.
Coniferous pollen grains are large and heavy, so they usually fall straight
down and don't scatter. As a result, this pollen is not as much of a
problem to allergy sufferers as other pollens such as ragweed. The
chemical composition of the pollen also makes it less allergenic than other
types.
