NEW HEALTH CARE FACILITY FOR YORKTON

Released on July 4, 2002

Yorkton is one step closer to having a new health care facility that will

bring all of the city's nursing home beds under one roof and improve care

for residents.

Health Minister John Nilson and Deputy Premier Clay Serby were in Yorkton

today to announce an immediate $2 million commitment toward the final

project cost of a new addition to the Yorkton and District Nursing Home.

The addition would replace several older facilities.

"Our top priority is improving the quality of health services and access to

care, while ensuring our health system is sustainable into the future,"

Nilson said. "This new facility will benefit long-term care residents in

the area while providing an improved workplace for our valued health

providers."

Saskatchewan Health is working closely with the health district to plan the

new facility and confirm details including the number of beds, specific

program areas and layout of the facility.

"I am very pleased to be here today to bring this good news from our

government to the people of the Yorkton area," Serby said. "I know we have

worked long and hard to develop this project. It is an outstanding example

of communities and government working together."

East Central District Health Board Chair Ben Weber said the financial

commitment and government's approval-in-principle to proceed with the

design of the project is a great step forward for people in the area.

"The new facility will greatly enhance our ability to provide quality

services to residents of our district," Weber said. "Our local residents

have worked tirelessly to raise money for the project and I'm very pleased

that government has shown its support today."
