MORE PORTABLE WATER PUMPING EQUIPMENT

Released on July 3, 2002

SaskWater is spending up to $500,000 to purchase 10 new portable water

pumping units. These will be added to the 40 units already available.

"This program has been extremely important for Saskatchewan producers over

the last couple of years, and I am very pleased to announce that we are

adding additional capacity," Deputy Premier and Agriculture, Food and Rural

Revitalization Minister Clay Serby said.

"This further investment in the rental program will help farmers,

particularly those livestock producers who continue to face dry conditions."

Earlier this year, SaskWater announced that it would reduce the equipment

rental charge by 50 per cent on distances over one mile to provide further

assistance to communities and individuals facing water shortages as a

result of the prolonged drought.

SaskWater rents pumping equipment to farmers, ranchers and municipalities

who use it to fill depleted reservoirs and dugouts. The equipment can be

rented by contacting SaskWater's head office in Moose Jaw or any of the

five regional offices throughout the province.

"This additional equipment will increase our pumping capacity by 25 per

cent," Minister Responsible for SaskWater, Ron Osika said. "It will help

us meet increased demand for our services during times of drought."

Neal Hardy, President of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural

Municipalities, expressed support for the purchase of more equipment. "The

dugout levels of many of our farmers and ranchers are extremely low," Hardy

said. "We are pleased that SaskWater is providing this much-needed

additional equipment."
