RSM RECOVERS MISSING MOCCASINS

Released on January 31, 2002

The Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) today announced the recovery of one

pair of moccasins that went missing from the Treaty Four Keeping House and

Archival Centre in Fort Qu'Appelle during September, 2001.

Six artifacts from the Ethnology collection of the RSM were loaned to the

Treaty Four Centre. Four of these items, three pairs of moccasins and a

belt with attached knife, sheath and pouch were stolen on either September

13 or September 14, 2001.

Last week, Fort Qu'Appelle RCMP informed the Royal Saskatchewan Museum of

the retrieval of one of the pairs of moccasins. Museum officials confirmed

the identification of the missing pair of moccasins the next day.

The moccasins that were returned once belonged to Chief James Blackman,

lifetime chief of Little Pine Reserve from the 1930s to 1957. They are

still in good condition.

The RCMP is continuing to try to locate the remaining two pairs of

moccasins and the belt.

More detailed descriptions of the artifacts can be found at the RSM web

site at: http://www.royalsaskmuseum.ca/

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of these items is asked to call

the Fort Qu'Appelle RCMP at (306) 332-2222 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-

8477.
