GZOWSKI REMEMBERED

Released on January 25, 2002

As Canada's premiers gathered in Vancouver to discuss the important issue

of health care, Premier Lorne Calvert took time out to recognize the

passing of a true Canadian icon.

Long-time CBC radio host and personality Peter Gzowski passed away Thursday

from emphysema at the age of 67.

"Peter Gzowski was often described as the best loved voice in the country,"

Calvert said. "His 15 years as the voice of CBC's 'Morningside' carved out

an indelible place in the hearts and minds of Canadians from coast to coast

to coast."

Premier Calvert recognized Gzowski's Saskatchewan connection. The long-

time radio broadcaster was once City Editor of the Moose Jaw Times Herald

in the 1950's. When Gzowski ended his 15-year reign as host of CBC's

'Morningside', he chose Moose Jaw as the location for his final broadcast.

"May 30th, 1997 will be forever etched in the memories of those who had the

privilege of listening to Peter Gzowski's final broadcast from the Temple

Garden's Mineral Spa in Moose Jaw," Calvert said. "It was a final

opportunity for Canadians to listen to the man who defined a generation."

Premier Calvert makes a special note that Peter Gzowski was one of the

first recipients of Saskatchewan's Distinguished Service Awards in 1997.

The award is given to people living outside Saskatchewan who made

significant contributions to the province and its people.

"Many people said he and his show were the thread that held together the

patchwork society of Canada," Calvert said. "On behalf of my wife Betty, I

would like to express my sincere condolences to Mr. Gzowski's family and

those who held a special place for him in their hearts – he will be truly

missed."
