WINTER RECREATION REPORT

Released on January 4, 2002

Start off the new year with some winter fun by getting involved in any of

the special events coming up at our provincial parks.

The Lakeland Tree Dodgers Snowmobile Rally will take place this Saturday,

January 5th at Emma Lake in the Christopher Lake Recreational Site

district. Registration will be ongoing from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at Emma

Lake Resort Hotel. Snowmobilers are advised to be cautious while riding as

trail conditions are currently limited due to insufficient snowfall. The

rally will be postponed until February 2nd if conditions are unfavourable.

Anyone interested in the event can get details by contacting the resort at:

(306) 982-4492 or 982-3133. Good snow conditions can be found at Meadow

Lake and Moose Mountain provincial parks where trails are currently being

packed and groomed with 10 centimetres of snow at the base.

Preparations are underway for the Naicam Cross Country Ski Loppett which

will take place on January 26th at Greenwater Lake Provincial Park.

Registration is being taken at Fisherman's Cove. Snow conditions are good

for cross country skiing at Meadow Lake and Moose Mountain provincial

parks, while trail conditions remain limited at Cypress Hills, Echo Valley

and Greenwater Lake provincial parks.

White Track in Buffalo Pound Provincial Park is open for downhill skiing.

Details on snow conditions and operation hours can be obtained by calling:

(306) 691-0100.

Anglers will find good fishing for rainbow trout at Steiestol Lake in

Greenwater Lake Provincial Park. Fishing is also good at Greenwater Lake

and Duck Mountain provincial parks. Winter anglers should be very cautious

on lakes, rivers and creeks, or on open water where ice thickness may vary

due to running aeration systems, such as on Steiestol Lake. In Meadow Lake

Provincial Park only snowmobiles and quads should be used on lakes at this

time, and in Echo Valley Provincial Park anglers are advised not to drive

vehicles on the seemingly frozen lakes due to thin ice, especially near the

river inlets and outlets. Anglers should check with the local park office

for current ice conditions before heading out.

Winter campers should contact the park office prior to and upon arrival for

details on camping services provided by the parks in winter. Arrangements

must be made in advance for winter camping at Valleyview Campground in Echo

Valley Provincial Park by calling: (306) 332-3215.
