TRANS CANADA TRAIL GETS BOOST

Released on February 4, 2002

The Province of Saskatchewan is contributing $300,000 in Centenary funds to

further develop the Trans Canada Trail.

The Trans Canada Trail is a national trail that accommodates walking,

cycling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and

snowmobiling. Upon completion, it will be the longest trail of its kind in

the world.

"This trail creates a legacy for future generations," Culture, Youth and

Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford said today. "Regular physical activity

is so important for good health, and there is no better inspiration for

physical activity than our wonderful Saskatchewan landscape."

Community and volunteer trail clubs are encouraged to apply for the

funding, which will be administered over three years. Costs of building

the trail will be covered to a maximum of $5,000 per project, and will be

adjudicated by the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA).

Application forms are available from Garry Michael at the Regina SPRA

office at (306) 780-9214. Application deadlines are March 15th, June 30th

and August 31st, 2002.

"I am very excited these funds will contribute to the development of the

Trans Canada Trail in Saskatchewan," SPRA President Garry McKay said.

"Our organization is committed to promoting outdoor recreation and active

living and the increase in the number and length of Saskatchewan trails as

a result of this funding is a positive development for everyone involved."
