PUMPING EQUIPMENT BENEFITS FARMERS

Released on August 22, 2002

The result of three recent tenders awarded to Saskatchewan businesses means

farmers will now have easier access to portable water pumping equipment.

Prolonged drought conditions resulting in water shortages have increased a

demand for this equipment available through SaskWater's pumping equipment

program. The 10 new pumping units are in addition to the 40 already

available to farmers needing equipment.

"This is good news for rural Saskatchewan," Minister Responsible for

SaskWater Ron Osika said. "The drought conditions we currently face have

increased the demand for pumping equipment and purchasing this equipment

means we increase our pumping capacity by 25 per cent. It also means work

for Saskatchewan people in rural communities."

The tenders were awarded to:

Valley West Irrigation Inc., a full service irrigation company

employing seven people in Outlook, was awarded a $211,000 contract

to provide pipe;

Armco Holdings, a trucking and manufacturing company employing 20

people in Sceptre, was awarded a $116,000 contract to provide

trailers. Armco Holdings will be hiring two new staff as a result

of this contract; and

Central Water and Equipment Services, an industrial pumping and

field service company employing eight people in Saskatoon, was

awarded a $57,000 contract to provide pumps.

Earlier this year, SaskWater announced that it would reduce the equipment

rental charge by 50 per cent on distances over one mile to assist rural

communities and individuals facing water shortages as the result of

prolonged drought.

SaskWater rents pumping equipment to farmers, ranchers and municipalities

to fill up depleted reservoirs and dugouts. The equipment can be rented by

contacting SaskWater's head office in Moose Jaw or any of the five regional

offices throughout the province. The deadline for application to rent the

pumping equipment is September 15th.
