LLOYDMINSTER AREA BENEFITS FROM CASINO FUNDING

Released on August 19, 2002

Student wellness centres are being established in six communities in the

Lloydminster area.

Culture, Youth and Recreation Minister Joanne Crofford presented $34,000

from the Community Initiatives Fund to the Battle River School Division

today in Lloydminster.

"The student wellness centres answer very serious needs of at-risk students

by giving them sound information on a wide range of wellness issues. With

this information, the students can make informed choices about their

lives," said Crofford. "I am pleased the government is supporting a

community need that helps young people facing critical life issues."

The student wellness centres will be located in Hillmond, Marshall,

Lashburn, and Maidstone. Marsden and Neilburg will share a centre.

Each community will have a coordinating committee responsible for the

operation of the centre. The committees will have representatives from the

student body, school staff, school administration and the Local Board of

Trustees. The Twin Rivers Health District is a partner in the initiative.

The Community Initiatives Fund was created by the province to distribute a

portion of casino profits for the benefit of Saskatchewan people. Since

the Fund was begun in 1997, 1,900 groups have received funding totalling

approximately $11.5 million.
