POISON HOTLINE WORKING

Released on April 30, 2002

Saskatchewan residents are seeing the benefits of an improved poison

emergency information service.

The Saskatchewan Poison Centre, which has been operating for six months,

provides access to a trained team of experts 24 hours a day. Residents can

call 1-866-454-1212 - free of charge - for immediate assessment and

treatment advice during poison emergencies.

"Our data shows that 70 per cent of poison calls we received resulted in

safe and effective treatment right at home," the Saskatchewan Poison

Centre's Medical Director Dr. Ingrid Vicas said. "That means treatment is

often immediate, and it saves the time and extra cost involved in going to

a health care facility."

The Saskatchewan Poison Centre was created through an agreement between

Saskatoon District Health, Regina Health District, Saskatchewan Health and

the Calgary Health Region's poison service. It offers a specially-trained

team of poison experts - pharmacists, nurses and doctors - who provide

medical advice, treatment recommendations and information. Its staff also

follows up with callers to ensure successful recoveries.

Treatment advice is available for all kinds of poisonings, including drugs,

plants, mushrooms, pesticides, snake and spider bites, household cleaners

and chemicals.

"This service ensures that all Saskatchewan residents and health providers

have access to a timely, high quality poison information system," Health

Minister John Nilson said. "While most poisonings involve children, adults

and seniors are also at risk for accidental poisonings. The majority of

these poisonings in all age groups are preventable. Effective poison

advice can make a significant difference in the health and safety of our

residents."
