A new economic development council is being created to promote business
opportunities in northwest Saskatchewan and establish a direct link between
the business sector and government on northern economic strategies.
Northern Affairs Minister Buckley Belanger today outlined plans for the new
council, at a news conference in Buffalo Narrows.
"We evaluated the system of Community-based Regional Economic Development
Organizations for the northwest and determined the new business council
would provide a better way to gain regional input to northern economic
planning and development," Belanger said. "This new development council
can engage the business community and ensure local input. It will provide
a cohesive regional business development approach."
The northwest development council will work closely with the provincial
government in creating strategies to support economic development. To
assist development of the council, a permanent office will be established
in Buffalo Narrows and a new full time regional manager position will be
staffed at that location.
The new council will have 11 to 13 members. It will function in place of
three development organizations that previously served northwest
Saskatchewan. It will be made up of business people from various
northwestern communities.
"There are many benefits to be gained by this restructuring," Belanger
said. "By moving to this model, we can emulate the success of the
Athabasca Economic Development and Training Corporation."
The council will work to develop greater links to existing government
committees and establish a more co-ordinated investment/loan process from
all lending institutions.
Belanger introduced Isadore Desjarlais of Buffalo Narrows and Isodore
Campbell of Patunak as the council co-chairs. Selection of council members
is ongoing and the new northwest planning council will have all members in
place and begin to function in its regional planning and development
capacity by May 2002.
