SCHOLARSHIPS FOR COMMUNITY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Released on April 9, 2002

The province's new Prince of Wales Scholarships are available to Grade 11

Community School students this spring to assist them in completing high

school. There will be 10 annual scholarships at a total value of $500 each.

Students will be nominated for scholarships during Grade 11 and will

receive their award in two payments, in the fall and in the spring, during

Grade 12.

"The scholarships were announced as the province's gift to the Prince of

Wales during his visit to Saskatchewan last spring," Minister of Learning

Jim Melenchuk said. "These scholarships reflect the special interests of

His Royal Highness in youth and education. Legislation is being introduced

this spring to establish a fund for the purpose of receiving additional

contributions from organizations and individuals to eventually increase the

number of scholarships available."

Community School leadership teams will make student nominations. The

deadline for this year's nominations is April 30th, 2002. Nomination

criteria include: school based and community based leadership initiative,

responsibilities outside school, financial need and academic performance.

Scholarship recipients will be selected by the end of this school year.

A provincial team composed of representatives from Saskatchewan Community

Schools will make the final selections.

"Community Schools are having a positive impact in meeting the diverse

needs of children and youth, their families and communities," Melenchuk

said. "Through community education and with assistance from the Prince of

Wales Scholarships, we are building on student success at school and for

the future."
