The Saskatchewan Electronic Tax Service (SETS) is now fully operational and
available to all businesses.
Since its launch as a pilot project in June, about 270 businesses have
signed on as SETS clients. One of those clients, Regina Certified General
Accountant Sandra Jackson, commended the government for offering the e-
filing service.
"SETS is an easy, efficient and safe alternative for filing provincial tax
returns," Jackson said. "It takes no more than a minute to complete, file
and pay the return, and it can be done at any time of the day or night."
Saskatoon-based Horizon Computer Solutions was the first business to sign
on to the system. The company's accountant, Janet Forstey, agrees the
system is 'a great time saver'.
"There's no longer a need to wait in line at your bank, process checks or,
if paying on line, pay a filing fee," Forstey said. "At Horizon, we
continually look for ways to improve the way we do business and this new e-
commerce site is a great business tool."
Larger companies are also realizing the benefits of e-filing. Mike
D'Angelo, with Canada Safeway Limited in Calgary, said, "We have been using
Saskatchewan Finance's SETS service for several months and we are very
pleased with it. We highly recommend it for use by others."
SETS allows businesses to file and pay the following tax returns over the
Internet: Provincial Sales Tax (PST), Liquor Consumption Tax, Tobacco Tax,
Fuel Tax, Beverage Container Program and Corporation Capital Tax instalment
payments. Other account information can also be accessed, such as history
of previous payments.
Businesses can also authorize a third party service provider (e.g.
accounting firm) to file and/or pay on their behalf. Accounting firms must
apply for their third Party ID number before a business can authorize them
to file on their behalf.
Finance Minister Eric Cline encouraged all Saskatchewan business owners to
visit the SETS web site to become familiar with the service. A virtual
tour of SETS and application forms can be accessed by clicking on E-File at
www.gov.sk.ca/finance. Applications can also be obtained by calling 1-800-
667-6102.
"I want to offer my sincere thanks to all the businesses that participated
in the pilot project," Cline said. "Their confidence and willingness to
work closely with finance officials have made a major contribution to the
success of the project."
