Released on September 13, 2001

Saskatchewan's battle against diabetes will be strengthened through the

work of a new 15 member Provincial Diabetes Advisory Body.

By providing advice on the co-ordination of current and new programs, the

Diabetes Advisory Body will play an important role in improving prevention,

care and treatment services for the control of diabetes in the province.

The Diabetes Advisory Body has representation from the Federation of

Saskatchewan Indian Nations, Métis Nation of Saskatchewan, Canadian

Diabetes Association, Health Canada, provincial health districts and

Saskatchewan Health. Membership includes diabetes educators, physicians,

nurses, dietitians and an endocrinologist.

Saskatchewan's Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. David Butler-Jones will

chair the Advisory Body. Provincial Diabetes Co-ordinator Marlene

Chapellaz will act as Secretary. (a full membership list is attached)

Health Minister John Nilson is committed to diabetes prevention and care,

and welcomes the expertise of the new Advisory Body. "Saskatchewan health

experts will help us make the best use of our money in preventing this
