AFFORDABLE SENIORS' HOUSING IN SASKATOON

Released on September 7, 2001

An innovative housing project for seniors was opened today in Saskatoon by

Premier Lorne Calvert.

The 50-unit Arbor Green development will help meet the need for quality,

affordable seniors' housing in Saskatchewan's largest city.

"Suitable housing is central to our quality of life and our physical and

mental well-being," Premier Calvert said. "Arbor Green is a credit to the

vision and perseverance of the Holiday Park Community Association, a long-

time advocate of construction of a housing project for seniors at this

location."

Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs and Housing provided nearly $2.4 million for

the $5-million project, including a $900,000 contribution from the

provincial Centenary Fund.

The Fund was established to help accelerate social housing and a variety of

other important capital projects leading up to the province's Centenary in

2005.

The City provided $250,000 for Arbor Green, and the residents themselves

provided the rest by investing equity from their former homes in the

project.

The province has been working closely with communities over the past number

of years to develop innovative, cost-effective housing solutions. Arbor

Green is the latest in a series of projects tailored to address the unique

needs of individual Saskatchewan communities.

Projects with similar funding arrangements are also underway in Regina and

Yorkton. These projects reflect the province's commitment to ensure

adequate, affordable housing for low- and moderate-income seniors.

The Arbor Green facility can also accommodate the delivery of special

services, such as meals, housekeeping, laundry and recreation, at the

discretion of residents, which will translate into more independence and

the ability for an enhanced quality of life.
