There will be more affordable housing for seniors in Yorkton, thanks to an
innovative funding arrangement involving the province, the city and seniors
themselves.
Sod was turned today to mark the official start of construction of Fairview
Arms, a 50-unit seniors' project to be built on 5th Avenue South.
"The province has been working closely with communities over the past
number of years to develop innovative, cost-effective housing solutions,"
Deputy Premier and Agriculture and Food Minister Clay Serby said, on behalf
of Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Ron Osika. "Fairview Arms is the
latest in a series of projects tailored to address the unique needs of
individual Saskatchewan communities."
Municipal Affairs and Housing is providing $2.25 million for the $5-million
project. The money will be drawn from the provincial Centenary Fund.
The fund was established to help accelerate social housing and a variety of
other important capital projects leading up to the province's centenary in
2005.
The city is providing $500,000 for Fairview Arms, and the future residents
are providing the rest by investing equity from their former homes.
A project with a similar funding arrangement was recently completed in
Saskatoon, and another is underway in Regina. These projects reflect the
province's commitment to ensure adequate, affordable housing for low and
moderate-income seniors.
The Fairview Arms facility will be able to accommodate the delivery of
special services, such as meals, housekeeping, laundry and recreation, at
the discretion of residents. This will translate into more independence
and the ability for an enhanced quality of life.
