TRADE DEALS SIGNED IN DALLAS

Released on November 29, 2001

The Team Canada West Trade Mission to Dallas and Los Angeles is already

paying dividends with the signing of a pair of deals.

"I am very pleased to see our efforts are paying off here in Texas,"

Premier Lorne Calvert said. "We believed this trade mission would benefit

Saskatchewan businesses and the people they employ back home. This trip is

already bearing the economic fruits of our labour."

Regina's Harvest Sun Seed and Grain Company has signed a significant

distribution deal with a large Texas distribution company. The deal will

see Western Organics Inc. purchase organic birdseed from Harvest Sun Seed

and Grain. The birdseed will then be sold in pet food, grocery and natural

food stores across the Southwestern United States.

"It's hard to knock on and open big doors if you are a small Saskatchewan

company," Harvest Sun Seed and Grain Company President Randy Johnson said.

"We need the support of the Premier and Prime Minister to open those doors,

and it's happening down here in Dallas. The agreement we signed Wednesday

will hopefully lead to a larger distribution deal across the Southwestern

United States."

The other deal signed was a memorandum of understanding between the Texas

Department of Economic Development and the Saskatchewan Trade and Export

Partnership (STEP). This is the first time the Texas Department of

Commerce has signed such a deal with any other State, Province or country.

"What this memorandum will do is create partnerships that will see

Saskatchewan businesses become more active in Texas, and Texas businesses

invest more in Saskatchewan," STEP President and CEO John Treleaven said.

"This will take trade between us to the next level adding more trade,

more dollars and more investment to the already $7.7 billion in total

exports to the United States each year."

Wednesday afternoon also saw major presentations made by The Canadian Light

Source Synchrotron and Ag-West Biotech out of Saskatoon. On Thursday,

Saskatchewan businesses will meet with energy executives in Dallas before

heading off to Los Angeles for the second leg of the trade mission.

This Team Canada West Trade Mission runs from November 27th to the 30th

the first two days in Dallas, the remaining two in Los Angeles. Premier

Calvert is leading the Saskatchewan delegation. Prime Minister Jean

Chretien, along with all western premiers and territorial leaders are also

on the trip.
