STUDENTS HELP REGINA CHARITY

Released on November 26, 2001

Lieutenant Governor Lynda Haverstock and 300 students are celebrating a

Christmas tradition at an event at Government House November 26th. 'A Gift

of Giving' is an event where students donate money, clothes or books to a

Regina charity.

This year's event offers support to Sophia House, a safe refuge for women

and children escaping family violence. Established in 1988, Sophia House

provides an environment of respect, equality and security.

"Traditions help to build solid foundations for communities and society,"

Lieutenant Governor Haverstock said. "It is important everyone has an

opportunity to enjoy the excellent quality of life in. Even very young

children can learn they have contributions to make and 'A Gift of Giving'

provides them with a chance to experience giving to a meaningful cause."

Throughout history, Saskatchewan's Lieutenant Governors have acted as

patrons to worthy organizations, with special activities taking place

during the Christmas season.

Lieutenant Governor Charles Mackintosh started the first fair in 1895 on

the current Government House grounds. Lieutenant Governor Amédée Forget,

who served from 1898 to 1910, supported all the Regina churches and sold

wreaths and crosses. The money was donated to hospital funds. Lieutenant

Governor Archibald McNab, who served from 1936 to 1945, helped raise money

for the war effort.

Lieutenant Governor Haverstock is patron to more than 80 organizations and

charities.
