COMMUNITYNET CONNECTS NORTH BATTLEFORD

Released on November 23, 2001

North Battleford today celebrated its recent connection to CommunityNet,

Saskatchewan's public sector high-speed network.

The $71 million broadband telecommunications network is helping

Saskatchewan communities take a quantum leap forward in Internet access.

CommunityNet is extending high-speed network and Internet access to public

institutions in 366 communities. Over the next three years, it will link

834 educational facilities, 310 health facilities, 86 First Nations schools

and 256 government offices.

Economic and Co-operative development Minister Eldon Lautermilch said

CommunityNet is a major on-ramp to the Information Highway for North

Battleford and towns and cities across our province. "It advances our

Partnership for Prosperity strategy and connects our communities to each

other and to the future."

Most of North Battleford's schools now have high-speed capabilities. In

the next few months, remaining schools, health care facilities and

government offices will receive high-speed Internet connections.

CommunityNet is a partnership of provincial government departments and

agencies, and the public sectors of education and health. The federal

government, through Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD), has

contributed $5 million toward the project's first phase that enables

hardware installation for the connection of schools, including First

Nations schools, throughout the province.

CommunityNet will be delivered to Saskatchewan communities through

SaskTel's existing and new fibre optics, and digital services lines via

copper wire and satellite. Satellite bandwidth used in CommunityNet will

be provided by the Saskatchewan Communications Network's (SCN) existing

satellite transponder.

Detailed information on the communities and facilities that will be

connected under CommunityNet can be found on the network's web site at

www.communitynet.ca.
