Safety has been improved at the busy intersection of Highway 11 and
Grasswood/Floral Road 3 km south of Saskatoon.
The safety improvements were completed at a total cost of $3.5 million.
There is now an improved alignment with a newly built and paved road 300
metres south of the existing intersection. Both Floral Road and Grasswood
Road now have a safer access route for drivers.
"It was important that we act to improve the safety at this intersection,"
Highways and Transportation Minister Mark Wartman said. "Residential and
business growth in the area is contributing to significantly higher traffic
volumes. This is now a safer intersection."
Improvements involved the construction of new ramps, service roads and
acceleration and deceleration lanes. These additions provide safer access
for residents, business owners and the public. Drivers are asked to pay
particular attention to signage as they learn to use the new intersection.
The intersection is used by about 10,000 vehicles per day.
Relocation of the intersection was the best option because it had
originally been built at a sharp angle close to a curve. The new
intersection has been open and fully operational since November 7th.
Funding for the project comes from the province's Centenary Fund. The $120
million fund will be used to help finance several infrastructure and
capital projects as Saskatchewan approaches the 2005 provincial centennial.
