TWINNING ON HIGHWAY 16 UNDERWAY

Released on May 17, 2001

Further twinning is set to start on a 16.7 km section of Highway 16 between

Maidstone and Lashburn.

"Work for this $6 million surfacing project will start this week and should

be completed by the end of July 2001," Highways and Transportation Minister

Pat Atkinson said. "Completion of this job will require an estimated 91

full-time workers."

Anderson Rental and Paving Ltd. of Saskatoon was awarded this project.

This 16.7 km surfacing project will take place primarily on the new

eastbound lanes of Highway 16 between Maidstone and Lashburn, with 2.5 km

of surfacing occurring in the westbound lanes near Lashburn.

"Twinning a further 16.7 km on Highway 16 will increase driver comfort and

safety for travellers," Atkinson said. "Our government is determined to

complete twinning on Saskatchewan's portion of the national highway system."

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million. Over 70 km of four lane highways will be opened on

Highways 1 and 16, valued at over $25 million.
