TAXATION EXPERT APPOINTED

Released on May 11, 2001

The government has appointed University of Saskatchewan Professor Jack Vicq

to provide advice and services to the Deputy Minister of Finance with

respect to tax and revenue administration.

Vicq will serve as the A.W. Johnson Distinguished Chair in Public Policy

for a one-year term beginning May 31st.

"I am very pleased Professor Vicq has agreed to serve the province in this

important role," Finance Minister Eric Cline said. "Tax and revenue

administration is undergoing many changes, both provincially and

nationally. Professor Vicq's background and achievements in this area will

be a tremendous asset to the province as we respond to these changes."

Vicq's initial priority will be to examine the province's current income

tax collection arrangements with the federal government. Re-negotiation of

these arrangements follows Saskatchewan's recent 'de-linking' of its

personal income tax system from the federal income tax system and the

increased independence of the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency to act on

behalf of provincial and territorial governments in tax administration.

Vicq is a Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of

Saskatchewan, College of Commerce and a member of the Institute of

Chartered Accountants of Saskatchewan. He has served on various committees

of the institute dealing with educational requirements and international

qualifications of the profession, as well as aboriginal issues.

The A.W. Johnson Distinguished Chair in Public Policy was established in

April, 2000 to attract recognized authorities in specific fields of public

policy. Vicq succeeds Professor Hartley Furtan, who last year acted as

special advisor on agriculture during international trade talks.
