NEW MELFORT LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY

Released on May 11, 2001

The North Central Health District now has the green light to build a brand

new long-term care facility in Melfort.

Health Minister John Nilson announced today the province will contribute

more than $14 million to help replace the Parkland Regional Care Centre.

The total cost of the project is close to $20 million.

"Our government is committed to an accessible, quality health care system,"

Nilson said. "We are working with our partners in the health system to

ensure we provide the best possible services to support our seniors and

other residents in their communities."

Nilson said Saskatchewan Health has been working closely with the health

district to plan the new regional care centre. It will include 105 long-

term care beds divided between a number of 'resident houses' to offer a

modern, home-like setting.

"I am extremely delighted with this final approval," North Central District

Health Board Chair Dale Link said. "It gives us a wonderful opportunity to

build a brand-new home for our seniors and young disabled and it will allow

our staff to provide quality care in a quality environment."

Nilson attended the grand opening today for the newly renovated and

expanded emergency, outpatient and lab/x-ray departments at the Melfort

Hospital. The $1.1 million project included a government contribution of

$675,000.

The improvements include a new trauma rooms, a larger ambulance bay, new

dedicated treatment rooms for visiting specialists, a new two-bed

observation bay and improved patient reception/waiting areas.

The new space will improve the efficiency of emergency and outpatient

services, improve comfort and privacy for patients and allow additional

visiting specialists to hold clinics at the hospital, offering a greater

range of services in the community.
