LEARNING ABOUT TRUCK SAFETY
Released on May 11, 2001
Scouts Canada, traffic law enforcement officers and provincial truck
drivers are teaming up this weekend for the first annual Big Rig Rally.
"This is an excellent opportunity for potential drivers to learn about the
No Zone Campaign in a fun way," Highways and Transportation Minister Pat
Atkinson said. "This is also a chance for parents to learn about how to
safely share the road with large trucks through their children."
The Big Rig Rally takes place Saturday, May 12th at the Tartan Curling Club
in Regina at 10 a.m. Scouts from across southern Saskatchewan will race
wooden models of big trucks that they have assembled from a kit.
There are five competitions to be held with the hand-made semi-trailers,
including speed, distance and obstacle course events on race tracks. Local
truck drivers will judge the competitions.
"I encourage people to come out to participate in this event and learn more
about driving safely on our highways," Atkinson said.
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's Transport Compliance Branch is
one of the sponsors of the event. The No Zone trailer, Mobile Vehicle
Inspection Station and the RCMP Camaro will be on display at the event.
