PREMIER CONGRATULATES COUGARS

Released on March 12, 2001

Premier Lorne Calvert congratulated the University of Regina Cougars for

their perseverance in winning a national ladies' basketball championship.

"The Cougars are truly inspirational," Calvert said. "They made three

previous trips to the finals but came up a bit short. This year though,

they would not be denied - their hard work and perseverance paid off and

the people of Saskatchewan are very proud of their accomplishment. My

congratulations to Head Coach Christine Stapleton, her staff and all the

players for an exciting finish to a great season."

The premier was also very pleased for the University of Regina as a whole.

This is the third national title ever for a university team, following in

the footsteps of the men's wrestling team that won titles in 1997 and 1998.

"Everyone at the U of R deserves recognition for the success of the many

athletics' programs at the university," Calvert added. "This was not just

a good year for women's basketball. The Rams' football team and the Cougar

women's hockey team also appeared in the national finals.

"U of R President Dr. David Barnard, his staff and students have put the

University of Regina on the map. This not only enhances the reputation of

the university, but of the City of Regina and the Province of Saskatchewan

as well. My heartfelt congratulations to everyone."
