Saskatchewan centenarians are recognized on a special commemorative plaque
unveiled at the Legislative Building in Regina today. The honour goes to
each of the 179 Saskatchewan residents who lived during the 19th, 20th and
21st centuries.
Premier Lorne Calvert and Provincial Secretary Pat Lorjé hosted a ceremony
to pay tribute to the members of the Three Century Club.
"This plaque ensures that these special citizens receive a permanent and
fitting place in Saskatchewan's history," Calvert said. "The plaque will
be mounted in a suitable location in the near future for everyone to enjoy
and appreciate."
On hand for the ceremony were several individuals named on the plaque.
"The Three Century Club was initiated as a way to acknowledge a unique
group of our pioneer citizens," Lorjé said. "The plaque offers a lasting,
public acknowledgement of this very special group of seniors."
The 80 kg bronze plaque was commissioned as part of the province's
millennium celebrations. In addition, each member of the Three Century
Club has received an individualized Celebrating Saskatchewan certificate
and had one metre of the Trans Canada Trail purchased in his or her name.
The Trans Canada Trail is a recreation trail that winds through every
province and territory in Canada.
"The future of our province is built on the accomplishments and character
of people like this unique group. These 179 individuals helped shape
Saskatchewan and its future. I am honoured to help recognize them today by
unveiling a plaque that preserves their names for future generations,"
Calvert said.
