MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR PIAPOT CREE NATION

Released on June 27, 2001

The Piapot Cree Nation signed an Aboriginal employment partnership

agreement with the province today, aimed at improving opportunities for

First Nations people.

This is the fourth Aboriginal organization to participate as a partner in

the province's Aboriginal Employment Development Program (AEDP). The

Piapot Cree Nation and the province are committed to working together to

prepare Piapot members for the workforce.

"We share a vision that in the future, every person will participate fully

in the social and economic fabric of our province," Aboriginal Affairs

Minister Pat Lorjé said. "The object of the AEDP is to increase the number

of Aboriginal people in the workforce. This partnership is another step

forward in increasing Aboriginal participation in Saskatchewan's workforce."

The AEDP strives to build a representative workforce in Saskatchewan where

Aboriginal people compete for jobs based on their skills and qualifications

and are represented at all occupational levels in proportion to their

numbers in the province's population.

"This agreement marks an historic step for our community," Piapot Cree

Nation Chief Murray James said. "It represents new opportunities and will

improve the lives of our members. We are committed to the vision of

Saskatchewan and, together, we will make it a reality. Today is the

beginning of a strong and lasting partnership between the Piapot Cree

Nation and the Government of Saskatchewan."

The Piapot Cree Nation is affiliated with the File Hills Qu'Appelle Tribal

Council. Currently, the band has 1,796 members and a total of 53 students

enrolled in post-secondary institutions. The AEDP partnership will help

the First Nation direct its members to training opportunities specific to

identified needs of Saskatchewan employers.

As a result of the Aboriginal Employment Development Program, more than 900

Aboriginal people have been hired by AEDP partners across the province.
