NEW SENIORS' HOUSING IN HUMBOLDT

Released on June 18, 2001

Seniors' housing in Humboldt received a boost today with the official

opening of Eastside Village, a 25-unit facility.

Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, an agency of Municipal Affairs and

Housing, contributed $1.6 million to the project. The City of Humboldt

contributed nearly $100,000 to the project.

The facility is an innovative mix of renovations and new construction. Two

existing row-style apartment buildings were joined to an existing three-

story apartment building on the same site through the construction of a

common hallway. Seven new units and a common amenity area were also built.

"There was a need for more adequate, affordable housing for seniors in

Humboldt," Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Ron Osika said.

"Eastside Village provides a secure living environment with enhanced

recreation and social opportunities."

"We're very proud to be able to offer more enriched housing for seniors in

Humboldt," Humboldt Housing Authority Chair Elaine Cann said. "Eastside

Village is a welcome addition to the social housing portfolio of our

housing authority."

Other renovations at Eastside Village included the installation of an

elevator to improve accesibility to the three-story building, as well as

modifications to the kitchens, bathrooms and doorways of three units to

improve accessibility for persons with mobility challenges.
