ST. VICTOR PROVINCIAL PARK CLOSED

Released on June 15, 2001

St. Victor Petroglyphs Provincial Historic Park has been closed to the

public until further notice. A recent rock fall at the park has created

safety concerns which need to be addressed to ensure visitors are not at

risk while at the site.

Representatives from Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management,

Saskatchewan Indian Cultural Centre Elders Group, Treaty 4 Governance

Centre, Friends of St. Victor Petroglyphs, Saskatchewan Archaeological

Society and Saskatchewan Municipal Affairs and Housing met to discuss the

recent rock fall at the park.

All groups agreed with the need to close the park immediately and to

install fencing, improve access to the site and restrict access to the

actual rock carvings. These repairs and improvements will enhance security

of the site and will help preserve and protect the petroglyphs. As soon as

the work is complete, the park will be reopened.

The interested parties will continue to work on short and long-term

initiatives aimed at enhancing St. Victor Petroglyphs Provincial Historic

Park and the experiences available to visitors at the site.

St. Victor Petroglyphs Provincial Historic Park is located about 35 km

southeast of Assiniboia. This is a significant site which contains

Aboriginal rock carvings which probably pre-date first European contact on

the Canadian prairies.
