SERBY URGES HELP FOR DROUGHT-STRICKEN FARMERS

Released on June 15, 2001

Deputy Premier and Agriculture and Food Minister Clay Serby today called on

farmers to help producers in areas with low moisture by listing any excess

forage, feed grains or pasture with the provincial Feed and Forage Listing

Service.

The service connects buyers with sellers and assists farmers who require

feed.

"A lack of moisture in some areas of the province is leading many producers

to look for supplemental feed and pasture," Serby said. "The lack of rain,

combined with the cool temperatures means grazing conditions are poor.

While rain will help improve conditions, producers will still need access

to additional feed supplies until conditions improve."

The listing service can be reached toll-free at 1-800-667-7564 from 8 a.m.

to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday. Producers with Internet access can view the

listing information on Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food's website or can

submit their requirements or their available feed on-line. The website

address is: www.agr.gov.sk.ca/feedforage.

Information on available supplies is also compiled and published twice

weekly, with copies sent to Saskatchewan rural municipal offices and rural

service centres.

Serby said there are a number of other programs available for producers

experiencing low moisture conditions. Information about these programs is

available from rural service centres and on Saskatchewan Agriculture and

Food's website.
