OUTLOOK RECEIVES FUNDS FOR SEWAGE TREATMENT FACILITIES

Released on June 15, 2001

The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan will provide more than half a

million dollars to the Town of Outlook to upgrade wastewater systems.

Natural Resources Canada Minister Ralph Goodale on behalf of Ron J.

Duhamel, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Secretary of State (Western Economic

Diversification) (Francophonie) and Finance Minister Eric Cline, on behalf

of Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Ron Osika, today announced

funding support through the Canada - Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program

(CSIP).

"Many communities like Outlook are taking measures to improve water and

wastewater infrastructure in its region," Goodale said. "With investments

from the federal, provincial and municipal governments, new construction

and upgrades can be maximized, to assist communities to improve quality of

life for residents throughout Saskatchewan."

The Canada - Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program will provide $569,600 to

the Town of Outlook to construct a new sewage lagoon and treatment

facility. The new facility will increase the reliability of wastewater

treatment facilities to eliminate the instances of the release of untreated

or partially treated sewage into the South Saskatchewan River.

"These projects reflect the priorities of the Canada-Saskatchewan

Infrastructure Program," Cline said. "Projects that protect our people and

our environment such as water and wastewater developments and upgrades,

solid waste management and recycling and improving the energy efficiency of

buildings owned by municipal governments are our main concern."

Other priorities under the program include local transportation

infrastructure, cultural and recreational facilities, infrastructure

supporting tourism, rural and remote telecommunications, high-speed

Internet access for local public institutions, and affordable housing.

"The Town of Outlook is extremely pleased that our new lagoon project met

the criteria for, and was approved by the Canada - Saskatchewan

Infrastructure Program for construction in 2001. This project, upon

completion will serve the citizens of Outlook for decades to come," Mayor

Robert Stephenson said.

The Canada - Saskatchewan Infrastructure Program (CSIP) is a five-year

program that will result in infrastructure investments of at least $170

million in Saskatchewan municipalities. The program provides up to 2/3 of

the eligible costs associated with community projects. Communities provide

the remaining one-third of project costs.

This year $24 million combined federal and provincial funding has been

allocated to 86 Saskatchewan municipalities.
