DIETITIANS ACT PROCLAIMED

Released on December 28, 2001

New legislation will come into effect January 1st to ensure dieticians are

qualified and accountable.

"The Dietitians Act prevents an unqualified practitioner from using the

title of dietician," Nilson said. "It also creates a better process for

addressing any public concerns by ensuring disciplinary hearings and

processes are open to the public."

The act allows public representatives to be included on the Saskatchewan

Dietetic Association's Board and Disciplinary Committee, and provides

greater flexibility in issuing licences and setting registration

requirements.

Nilson says dietitians play a key role in promoting healthy lifestyles and

preventing disease, a role which provides long-term dividends for the

Saskatchewan public. He adds The Dietitians Act is another example of how

government works with health sector partners to strengthen the health care

system.

"We are very pleased with this legislation because it will ensure all

members maintain a high standard of knowledge and competence," Saskatchewan

Dietetic Association President Sherri Hildebrandt said. "Another benefit

of the legislation is it allows dietitians to move freely between

provinces."

The Dietitians Act replaces older legislation that governs how dieticians

operate. The act was developed after extensive consultation with the

Saskatchewan Dietetic Association and other organizations.
