SGI President Larry Fogg today announced SGI will waive the $700 deductible
for Saskatchewan residents who have their vehicles stolen while using an
anti-theft device.
The incentive program will begin immediately and will be in effect until
June 1, 2002.
"This program is a short-term incentive to encourage vehicle owners to take
extra precautions to protect their property from theft, and to make those
precautions a daily habit," Fogg said. "It's the key to deterring thieves
and reducing auto thefts over the long term."
2,638 auto theft claims were reported to SGI to the end of October, 2001.
This resulted in costs of almost $9 million, with over half of the
province's auto theft claims from the Regina area.
"This program is a great way to draw attention to auto theft prevention,"
Regina Chief of Police Cal Johnston said. "We know anti-theft devices
deter thieves because disabling them takes too much time. However, it's
important to remember anti-theft devices are only effective if used every
time you leave the vehicle."
"Auto theft prevention is every vehicle owner's responsibility," RCMP Chief
Superintendent Chris Bothe said. "Taking simple steps with your vehicle
like keeping the doors locked at all times, keeping the visible interior
empty and using an anti-theft device can save you a big headache in the
long run."
Common anti-theft devices include steering wheel locking bars, alarm
systems and electronic disabling devices. SGI does not consider satellite
tracking systems that locate vehicles after they are stolen to be anti-
theft devices.
