WASTE MANAGEMENT FUNDS FOR WILKIE AREA

Released on August 22, 2001

The West Yellowhead Waste Resource Authority Inc. for Wilkie, Maidstone and

area will receive $158,750 in Centenary Funds for municipal waste

management system upgrades.

The waste management authority will use the funds to cost-share capital

purchases and improvements to their waste management systems, including the

purchase of bins and the establishment of recycling depots in the area.

The project is expected to be completed by March 31, 2002.

"Effective waste management is a shared responsibility - we must all work

together to help sustain our natural world," Premier Lorne Calvert said.

"Operating a modern landfill is expensive, and these funds will help the

municipality manage their solid waste systems effectively and efficiently."

Money for the project will come from the Centenary Fund, established to

fund important capital projects as Saskatchewan approaches its centennial

in 2005.

Municipalities will soon be able to apply for funding for year three

(2002/2003) of the four year program. Application forms will be available

by March 1, 2002 at the Environmental Protection Branch of SERM.
