FUNDING FOR REGIONAL LANDFILLS

Released on August 22, 2001

Five Saskatchewan regional waste management authorities will receive a

total of $575,000 in centenary funds for municipal waste management system

upgrades. Premier Calvert announced the funding today at a stop in Wadena

as part of the Dialogue with Saskatchewan bus tour.

Funding has been approved for the Central Regional Waste Management

Authority Inc. (Wadena and area), the North Central Waste Management

Corporation (Prince Albert and area), the Red Coat Waste Resource Authority

(Carlyle area), the West Yellowhead Waste Resource Authority Inc.

(Wilkie/Maidstone area) and the Saskatoon Regional Waste Management

Association.

"Municipalities have shown leadership in looking at the full range of

options available for waste management, including waste reduction, reuse,

recycling, materials recovery and composting," Premier Lorne Calvert said.

"Operating a modern landfill is expensive and these funds will help

municipalities manage their solid waste systems effectively and

efficiently."

These waste management organizations will use the centenary funds to cost-

share capital purchases and improvements to their waste management

systems. The authorities will use the funding to modernize and consolidate

landfills, improve recycling opportunities and conduct research. These

improvements will help encourage recycling programs, create employment,

reduce the number of landfills and ensure more environmentally sensitive

solid waste disposal in Saskatchewan.

"Effective waste management is a shared responsibility - we must all work

together to help sustain our natural world," Calvert said.

Municipalities will soon be able to apply for funding for year three

(2002/2003) of the four year program. Application forms will be available

by March 1, 2002 at the Environmental Protection Branch of Environment and

Resource Management.

The Centenary Fund was established to help fund important capital projects

as Saskatchewan approaches its centennial in 2005.
